Spring Mower Prep Checklist - Get Ready for Mowing Season
Spring Mower Prep Checklist: Get Ready for Mowing Season
Before the first cut of the season, take 30 minutes to prepare your mower. This prevents breakdowns and ensures a clean cut all season long.
Complete Spring Prep Checklist
1. Inspect Belts
- Check deck belt for cracks, fraying, or glazing
- Check drive belt (self-propelled mowers)
- Replace any questionable belts NOW
- Verify proper belt tension
2. Blade Maintenance
- Remove and sharpen blades (or replace)
- Check for blade damage or cracks
- Balance blades after sharpening
- Check blade bolt tightness when reinstalling
3. Engine Service
- Change oil (especially if not done in fall)
- Replace or clean air filter
- Install fresh spark plug
- Check/clean fuel system
- Use fresh fuel (old gas causes problems)
4. Deck Cleaning
- Scrape dried grass from underside of deck
- Clean around pulleys and belt paths
- Check discharge chute for blockage
- Lubricate any grease fittings
5. Wheels & Drive System
- Check tire pressure (riding mowers)
- Inspect wheels for damage
- Test self-propel engagement
- Verify height adjustment works properly
6. Safety Check
- Test blade brake/kill switch
- Verify safety interlocks work
- Check handles and controls
- Inspect power cord (electric mowers)
Don't Skip the Belts!
Belt failures mid-season are frustrating and often happen when you need the mower most. A belt that looks "okay" in spring may fail after a few hours of use when temperatures rise.
If in doubt, replace it. Belts are inexpensive compared to the inconvenience of a breakdown.
Stock Up for the Season
Consider keeping these on hand:
- Spare deck belt
- Extra oil and filter
