V-Belt Troubleshooting Guide - Fix Common Problems

V-Belt Troubleshooting Guide: Diagnose & Fix Common Problems

Belt problems? This guide helps you identify the cause and solution for common V-belt issues.

Belt Squealing

Symptoms

High-pitched squeal, especially at startup or under load.

Causes & Solutions

Cause Solution
Loose belt Adjust tension
Glazed belt surface Replace belt
Oil/grease contamination Clean pulleys, replace belt
Misaligned pulleys Realign pulleys
Worn pulley grooves Replace pulleys

Premature Belt Wear

Symptoms

Belt fails before expected service life.

Causes & Solutions

Cause Solution
Over-tensioned belt Reduce tension to spec
Pulley misalignment Align pulleys properly
Worn/damaged pulleys Replace pulleys
Wrong belt size Verify correct belt spec
Excessive heat Improve ventilation, use Kevlar belt

Belt Flipping or Turning Over

Symptoms

Belt rotates on its axis, running twisted or upside down.

Causes & Solutions

  • Severe misalignment - Realign all pulleys
  • Worn pulley grooves - Replace pulleys
  • Foreign objects in groove - Clean pulley grooves
  • Incorrect belt profile - Verify belt matches pulley

Belt Cracking

Bottom Cracks (Normal Wear)

Small cracks on the inner surface are normal aging. Replace when cracks exceed 1/3 belt depth.

Side Cracks (Abnormal)

Indicates problems:

  • Pulley grooves too narrow
  • Excessive heat
  • Chemical exposure

Belt Running Hot

Causes

  • Under-tensioned belt (slipping)
  • Over-tensioned belt (excess friction)
  • Overloaded drive
  • Poor ventilation
  • Pulleys too small for belt type

Solutions

  • Correct tension to specification
  • Reduce load or increase belt capacity
  • Upgrade to cogged belt for better heat dissipation
  • Consider Kevlar belt for high-heat applications
